I’m a supplier of steel moulds, and today I wanna talk about the coating process of a steel mould. It’s a super important part of making high – quality steel moulds, and it can really make a big difference in how well the moulds perform. Steel Mould

Let’s start from the beginning. Before we even think about coating, we need to make sure the steel mould is properly prepared. First off, the surface of the steel mould has to be clean. We’re talking about getting rid of any dirt, grease, or oxides that might be on it. This is usually done through a process called cleaning and degreasing. We use special cleaning agents that can break down and remove all those unwanted substances. It’s like giving the mould a good scrub before we start the next steps.

Once the mould is clean, we move on to the surface treatment. One common method is sandblasting. We blast the surface of the mould with fine sand particles at high speed. This does a couple of important things. First, it roughens up the surface a bit, which helps the coating to adhere better. It’s like creating a sort of "grip" for the coating. Second, it can further clean the surface by removing any remaining contaminants.

Now, let’s get into the actual coating process. There are several different types of coatings that we can use on steel moulds, and each has its own unique properties and benefits.

One of the most popular types of coatings is the ceramic coating. Ceramic coatings are great because they’re extremely hard and wear – resistant. They can withstand high temperatures and are also resistant to chemical corrosion. When we apply a ceramic coating, we usually use a process called physical vapor deposition (PVD). In PVD, we heat up a ceramic material in a vacuum chamber until it turns into vapor. Then, the vapor is deposited onto the surface of the steel mould, forming a thin, hard layer. This layer can protect the mould from abrasion and extend its lifespan significantly.

Another type of coating is the titanium nitride (TiN) coating. TiN coatings are known for their gold – like appearance, but don’t let that fool you. They’re not just for looks. TiN coatings are very hard and have good wear resistance. They can also reduce friction between the mould and the material being molded, which means less wear and tear on the mould. To apply a TiN coating, we use a similar process to PVD. We heat up titanium and nitrogen gas in a vacuum chamber, and they react to form TiN, which is then deposited on the mould surface.

We also have diamond – like carbon (DLC) coatings. DLC coatings are super smooth and have very low friction coefficients. They’re great for applications where we need to release the molded product easily. For example, in plastic injection molding, a DLC – coated mould can make it much easier to eject the plastic part without any damage. The application of DLC coatings usually involves a plasma – enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process. In PECVD, we use a plasma to break down hydrocarbon gases and deposit a hard, carbon – based coating on the mould.

After the coating is applied, we need to do some post – treatment. This is important to ensure that the coating adheres properly and has the best possible performance. One common post – treatment step is heat treatment. We heat the coated mould to a specific temperature and hold it there for a certain period of time. This helps to improve the hardness and adhesion of the coating.

Quality control is a crucial part of the coating process. We use a variety of methods to check the quality of the coating. For example, we use hardness testing to make sure the coating is hard enough. We also use adhesion testing to ensure that the coating is firmly attached to the mould surface. If there are any issues with the coating, we can adjust the coating process parameters to improve the quality.

The coating process of a steel mould is not just about adding a layer on top of the mould. It’s a complex and precise process that requires a lot of knowledge and experience. The right coating can make a steel mould last longer, perform better, and produce higher – quality products.

If you’re in the market for high – quality steel moulds with excellent coatings, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve been in the business for a long time, and we know how to make steel moulds that meet your needs.
